Every stitching shop keeps a register. The trouble is not that the register is on paper — plenty of good shops have run on paper for forty years. The trouble is that nobody can find last year's page while a customer is standing at the counter.
What the second visit actually costs
Taking a set of measurements again takes four or five minutes. That is not the expense. The expense is that the new numbers rarely match the old ones exactly, and the shirt that fitted last time now does not.
- The customer notices the difference before the shop does.
- The alteration is free, because the shop cannot charge for its own slip.
- The karigar has already been paid for the first stitching.
- And the customer, who was a regular, now has a reason to try the shop across the road.
None of that appears in the accounts as a loss. It shows up a year later as a customer who stopped coming, and nobody in the shop ever knows why.
Why the numbers drift
Two people measuring the same man on the same day will not write the same numbers. That is not carelessness — it is how measuring works.
- The tape sits differently. A little higher on the waist, a little more slack at the chest.
- The customer stands differently. Shoulders back the first time, relaxed the second.
- The clothes underneath are different. Summer and winter are not the same body.
- The words mean different things. One person's "length" is taken from the shoulder, another's from the neck.
Half an inch in any of those is invisible on the page and obvious on the finished kameez. And the customer is not comparing against the tape — they are comparing against the garment they already own and like.

Taken once, kept for good
When the measurements sit against the customer rather than against the order, the second visit starts where the first one finished. The shop opens the customer, sees what was taken and when, and changes only what has changed.
That last part matters. People do change — a man is not the same size at fifty as at forty-two. The point is not that measurements are frozen. The point is that you adjust a known number rather than inventing a new one from scratch, and the adjustment is a deliberate decision somebody made rather than an accident of how the tape fell.
What this is worth in a busy season
Four minutes is not much on a quiet Tuesday. In the five weeks before Eid it is the difference between coping and not.
Three hundred repeat customers, four minutes each, is twenty hours — most of a working week, at exactly the time of year when you do not have an hour spare. A shop that can take a repeat order in under two minutes takes more orders with the same staff, and that is before counting the alterations it did not have to do for free. Doing it on paper, properly
You do not need software to fix this. You need the measurements filed by customer, not by date.
If you want to keep the register, the workable version is:
- 1 A card per customer, filed by mobile number rather than by name — two Muhammad Aslams a month is normal, two mobile numbers is not.
- 2 The date beside every measurement, so you know how old it is.
- 3 New numbers added below the old ones, never written over them. The history is the useful part.
- 4 The card number written on the order, so the two can find each other.
This works. Shops have run it for decades. Its weakness is that it is one physical card in one place — so it is no help when the customer phones, no help when you are at home, and gone entirely if the file gets wet.
A measurement you cannot find in ten seconds while a customer waits is a measurement you do not really have.
Doing it on a screen

- Eight garments, each showing only its own boxes, in the same words your register uses — tera, ghera, chaak, kaf.
- The stitching styles picked from a list rather than written out, so two people writing the same order write it the same way.
- Last time's numbers already filled in when a customer comes back, ready to be confirmed or adjusted.
- Reachable from the counter and from the phone in your pocket, with or without a signal.
Nothing about it is clever. It is simply the register, kept somewhere it cannot be lost.
